First Baptist Church of Norfolk: A Legacy of Faith and Service
Founded in July 1800, First Baptist Church stands as the oldest Baptist congregation in Norfolk, Virginia. For over 225 years, we have remained steadfast in spreading the Word of the Lord and serving the Hampton Roads community with unwavering faith and commitment.
In 1958, First Baptist answered a historic call by opening its doors to tutor “The Norfolk Seventeen,” demonstrating our enduring dedication to education and social justice. This pivotal moment marked our role as a beacon of hope and progress in the city.
Our 19th pastor, Dr. Robert G. Murray, began his tenure in 1983 under the theme, “Pastor and People Working Together for a More Excellent Way.” His leadership ushered in a vibrant expansion of ministries—Youth, Singles, Couples, Seniors, and Military—each designed to strengthen families and build resilient communities in changing times. Outreach initiatives such as the Tutorial Ministry, Soup Kitchen, and Clothes Closet extended our mission beyond the church walls, offering tangible support to those in need.
In February 2024, Rev. Jerry L. Holmes was installed as our 20th pastor, embracing the vision of “Building Upon the Legacy.” Under his guidance, First Baptist continues to reach beyond its doors, developing neighborhood-based missions and reaffirming our role as spiritual shepherds to the city of Norfolk.
Today, First Baptist Church is more than a historic landmark—it is a living ministry, committed to impacting the world for Christ, one community at a time.
